Death of Mrs. Ann Beal After Nine Weeks Illness

This morning at 10:50 o clock Mrs. Ann Beal died after an illness of nine weeks. A Lawrence resident for 34 years she was a widow for 11 years. She is survived by two sons George Beal of Leavenworth Kansas and Eff Beal of Davenport Iowa. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.

Fraternal Day Parade Highlights Old Home Week

Fraternal Day drew large crowds as Lawrence hosts a bustling Old Home Week with a towering parade featuring Elks, Woodmen and other orders. German Day events follow with ceremonies, speeches and a band concert at F A A hall. Officials expect crowds to grow, schools join Friday and Saturday processions, and local merchants close to view the festivities.

Atlantic October issue offers rich public topics and fiction

Crowds Gather for Old Home Week Exhibits in Lawrence

Large crowds attend Lawrence events this week drawing steadily from poutry and garden displays to private exhibits. Families and townspeople fill the streets as afternoon and evening hours bring heightened activity and enjoyment of the Old Home Work celebration. Lawrence residents praise the week long display of agricultural and horticultural products calling it a model exhibit for Kansas. George A. Flory, chief clerk in the state treasurer’s office, says the Lawrence display has never been equalled and should become an annual attraction in the business district. Public support grows for repeating the “Old Home Week” style event in future years.

Free Show on the Pike Ends in Knife Threats at Paris Exposition

A chaotic outdoor attraction on the pike features two scantily clad assistants and a ventriloquized barker promising a free spectacle. Amid the crowd a performer threatens violence with a sword while others push forward for coins and rings, turning the event into a risky sideshow.

Prizes Awarded In Agricultural Show Ribbons Placed

The agricultural and horticultural awards were finalized with prize ribbons awarded to numerous entries. Judges W G Pandleton J Underwood and J G Watt oversaw the event as dozens of crops and fruits were recognized for best varieties and displays including corn oats potatoes beans apples and squash with many named exhibitors and firms noted for top prizes.

Very Thankful Man and Family Escape Mob in Bourbon County

Fort Scott Kans Oct 5 One of the leaders in a mob chasing George Riggin his wife and his step daughter was knocked down by running horses as they fled to Girard Crawford grohpry jail. The family escaped with their lives after alleged starvation of their child and a sharp clash with pursuing riders. The 2 year old daughter suffered abuse but was reported slightly improved though unconscious days later.

Missing funds and bank robberies crop up in scattered notes

The items report 220000 missing from an Alamosa bank that closed, with 370000 of depositors funds diverted to an Idaho Springs mining venture. A Springield bank vault was dynamited, yielding 52000. At a New York dinner Bishop Potter argued for higher education while a self made millionaire, who never attended college, quipped that he thanks heaven for his ignorance. Potter replied that the man has much to thank heaven for and the exchange drew laughs.

Licenses in Kansas Top Counties and Gaps in Tax Stamps

Topeka reports that since July 1 Kansas has issued 2427 government liquor licenses. Wyandotte leads in licenses with Leavenworth second, Crawford third, Shawnee fourth, Sedgwick fifth, Cherokee sixth, Atchison seventh, and Montgomery eighth. Nine counties remain free of government liquor dealers and have not issued tax stamps, often housing two vendors or none.

Verdict for May Mendenwald against Kevekordes

A jury in Indiana court awarded Miss May Mendenwald a 500 verdict against Theodora Kevekordes, recorder of Vandenburgh county. Mendenwald, a singer known as May Melbane, sought 220,000 for breach of promise to marry. New York testimony revealed 325,000 received by W E Thunsmell from Vice President Robert A Grandis and paid to the Republican campaign chairman.

Three Burned to Death in Brooklyn Fire

A four story Reid Avenue building in Brooklyn caught fire, leaving three occupants burned to death. Parents were rescued in dying condition and sent to hospital, five other tenants hospitalized for burns, two more injured.

Public Works Resolutions Passed by Lawrence City Council

Lawrence Kansas minutes show two city council resolutions approving street improvements. One authorizes paving Quimcy Street to Delaware Street with brick courses and stone curbs, funded by ten annual installments, published by the city clerk. The second orders Ohio Street paving from Winthrop to Henry with brick courses, sand foundation, and installments, plus a note of a forthcoming M C A meeting for women residents.
