The Jecundar reprints a clarification from Chicago Times editor stating reports that W. F. Storey is a mental wreck and that control of the Times was taken from him are false. The Times editor asks papers to publish a correction to prevent further circulation of the mistaken claim.
Oct 4 dispatches from Atlanta Macon and Columbus report Stephens leading in Georgia with large majorities across counties and the Democratic ticket winning state offices and the governor’s race. Across the state election returns indicate a quiet vote with Democratic dominance and high percentages in Muscogee County. Other items note obituaries and nominations in Cincinnati Syracuse and Denison with local political updates.
Worcester Massachusetts October 4 The Republicans of the Tenth district renominate Woman W Rice for Congress.
The Seventeenth District Republicans nominated F A Johnson for Congress. The ninth quadriennial Christian church convention met with many delegates from the US and Canada, including Rev. A W Coon as president, with welcome by Rev. B C Abbott and remarks by Rev. D A Lange on the South as an American. Temperance and stock market items follow with various resolutions and earnings reports, including details on Chesapeake & Ohio, Louisville & Nashville, and an Erie printer incident.
Washington reports opening day results from the Potomac River Regatta. Junior sculls winner is Smith of Columbia in 12 05. Senior singles goes to Geo McVenney of Potomac club in 10 41. Secretary Teller reverses predecessor decision on Turtle Mountain Indian lands in Dakota near Devil's Lake. He directs restoration of the lands to the public domain and opens them for settlement.
Chicago Republicans in the First district nominate R W Dunham, president of the Chicago Board of Trade, a surprise pick as William Aldrich was expected to be renominated. Democrats in the Third district nominate W P Black for Congress after Mayor Carter Harrison declines.
Brewster Cameron was questioned at the Department of Justice regarding when a report on the alleged bribery attempt involving Dickson would be made. Cameron declined to speak, citing ongoing investigation by the attorney general and stating it was not proper to comment at present.
Cherokee Kansas October 4 The district convention of the Eleventh Judicial district nominated on the sixty fourth ballot George B Chandler of Montgomery county for judge by a vote of 36 to 22 over Dr B Glass The father candidates John T Kass and John R Ratter had withdrawn The convention adjourned with the utmost good feeling.
H B Smith of Ottawatomie was renominated by Republicans in Fontana for the Twenty first district after a twenty seventh ballot. The convention urged support for Plumb for Congress. Postmaster Perry opened a new $1200 second class post office. The Miami county fair opened with large attendance and superior stock displays, including several fine horses from Missouri and beyond, promising a magnificent success.
Chicago reports that Guiteau and Mrs Scoville and Miss Chevalier visited the jail after stopping at a florist to pick funeral flowers. Guiteau unwrapped the bouquet, showed it to the women, then handed it to the warden who took it to the cell. Mrs Scoville did not hold the bouquet. In Ohio, Samuel Hall was attacked at an ore pit by John Jackson who stole 16 dollars and confessed. Hull is said to be dying. A New York dispatch notes the steamship Gilbert, en route from Hamburg, met the disabled Mount Lebanon east of Sable Island on Oct 1 and towed it 110 miles before cable parted.
The Peabody Educational Fund Association trustees and directors met in New York with Ex-President Hayes Justice Waite and others present. A separate Cheyenne dispatch notes journalist Alic a Race touring by bicycle from San Francisco to Danville. In Prospect Tennessee a man named Henry Holloway was found guilty of brut ally outraging Mrs Rodgers and was hanged by a mob near a bridge.
In Vicksburg on October 4 a steamer captain reported the wreck of the Lee with five bodies tied to bushes nearby. A group of gentlemen who lost relatives aboard the vessel traveled to identify the remains.
A mixed dispatch from Constantinople notes the Sultan pressing Lord Dafferin for a reply on troop evacuation, with potential direct appeal if unanswered. Vienna reports Emperor Franz Joseph praising Hungarian PM Tisza for quelling St Petersburg Jewish riots. Rome dismisses unfounded Pope shooting rumors. Marseille notes Queen Victoria may visit South France, while Paris outlines Tirard’s plan to fund public works by increasing floating debt. In Glasgow on Oct 4 Sir Stafford Northcote argued the Egyptian war was unjustifiable and unnecessary. He said a firm government stand at the outset could have avoided the conflict. In Hartford on Oct 4 delegates nominated Thomas M. Waddley of New London for Governor.
Baseball results show Providence defeating the Bostons 2 to 0, Buffaloes defeating the Philadelphias 19 to 6, and the Metropolitans beating the Chicagoes 11 to 5 in games dated October 4. New York October 4 Judge Andrews writes a brief letter accepting the nomination as Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals made at the Saratoga convention. He accepts the honor with a sense of obligation to the Republican party of the State.
A Bremnan Indiana Gazette special reports F B Turner jewelry store in Cincinnati entered by burglars last night. The safe was blown open and stock valued about 4000 dollars seized. Nearby reports note other regional thefts and losses.
