A fact check of Wednesday nights presidential debate shows both candidates misstated figures on Medicare spending health care taxes jobs and offshore profits. Romney defends 716 billion Medicare cuts while pledging repeal of the law and Obama cites job gains but omits government job losses.
The debate left Romney aggressive and on offense while Obama appeared calm and guarded. Obama challenged Romney on tax plans and deficits but offered few new details, as Romney defended his tax stance and Bain Capital record. Analysts note Romney to sustain momentum though economists doubt he fully explains tax cuts without debt rise. Early voting continues as both camps weigh the impact ahead of two more debates.
In a Dole Institute focus group, attendees offered mixed views on the debate. Elaine Grosser faulted Romney for out of touch remarks about 47 percent, while her husband Stewart found Obama more convincing on stronger answers. KU students saw nuance but not a decisive shift, and Bill Lacy called no clear winner.
A reader poll asks who won last night's presidential debate between President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. It also queries when respondents last sent a greeting card with varying recall options.
