New Rhodesia plan drafted by Africans

Black nationalist leader Joshua Nkomo said Rhodesia’s five front line presidents drafted a new plan to move Rhodesia to black majority rule, superseding Kissinger’s proposal. He said the new document aims for a sooner transition and disputed the Pretoria agreement.

Rain misses Lawrence area as brief shower gives trails of moisture

A cold front swept through north central Kansas bringing a light 0.12 inch shower to Lawrence and nearby towns after a night of 0.05 to 0.31 inch totals. Forecasters warned of clearing and cooler conditions with a 60 percent rain chance early then diminishing into the weekend.

KPL insulation-check program expands energy savings

The Kansas Power and Light Co announces a statewide free attic insulation inspection program under its Stop the Energy Thief campaign. A representative will assess attic R-values, offer blown insulation by a KPL contractor, and provide 24 month financing on the electric bill for owner occupied homes with inspections in single family residences.

Patrolman shoots hole in patrol car roof over shotgun safety

In North Lawrence Patrolman David Cobb fired a shell from a shotgun stored in his car more than once after opening a vented roof hole. Lt. Vernon Harrell said the blast pierced the roof drive chain and injured Cobb’s ears but he returned to duty. The incident is under investigation and the department considers standardizing one shotgun model. Elections for U.S. Hall of Fame entry require 25 years in government service, with trials every five years.

City to discuss disorderly conduct ordinance change

Adult and juveniles charged after laundry break in

An adult and two juveniles were arrested by Lawrence police after a break in at Bungalo Easy Wash. Richard Poke, 19, faced burglary and grand theft counts and posted 3000 dollars bond while the juveniles were sent to juvenile court. Authorities traced a plastic bag dispenser to East 15th Street and cited damage to two other vending machines totaling 125 dollars.

Gunman kills Spanish official in Basque city

A lone gunman killed Juan Maria de Araluce y Villar, president of Guipuzcoa province and council member, as his car returned from lunch in San Sebastian. His driver and a police escort also died. The attacker fled in a white car amid Madrid's king away from the city.
