Government figures show September unemployment at 8.3 percent overall while heads of households and minority workers faced higher rates. Teen unemployment fell, but adult men and Black workers rose. Average duration climbed to 16.2 weeks and hard core unemployment hit 1.6 million.
Ed Carter chairman says the United Fund unites all Douglas County residents with a county run volunteer effort. The drive starts with a division chairmen meeting and seeks 190000 to fund 19 local agencies. Volunteers, companies, and agency workers will solicit donations countywide with minimal admin costs.
The Postal Service announces Dec 28 increases across first class and parcel post, with a three cent rise for a first class letter, air mail costs up, and new 13 11 and 24 cent stamp denominations. Parcel post up about 10 percent. No new air stamp. early November service fee rises expected.
Marilyn Taul is queen and Roger Whaley is king at Baldwin High School's Homecoming halftime after a 12-0 victory over Spring Hill. Other queen nominees were Jan Pugh and Linda Waltz. other king nominees were Walter Freeman and Dean Routh. A Sigma Chi incident left Michael Harmon with a knife wound. Michael Ball said the blade slipped while tossing a cake knife at cans. No charges expected.
Lawrence police arrested Fred Ramirez 18 of 315 E. 19th after neighbors heard glass breakage at Brooks Tavern 1307 W Seventh. He was found near a garage behind the tavern and bonded on attempted burglary and criminal destruction of property charges with $3,000 bond. Damages totaled about $60 with four Brooks windows and two garage windows broken.
Judge Barbara denied defense motions to dismiss indictments of six Burgess, Latimer and Miller members in a $500000 design contract kickback scheme tied to a $30000 campaign contribution for Governor Docking. Trial set for Monday with Malloy and Dick Docking to follow later. motions for continuance or venue change denied.
The Douglas County Disaster Siren Warning System will be tested at noon Monday. If weather is bad the test shifts to the following Monday.
Kenneth Butler, 27, of Lawrence was sentenced to two years in prison and five years probation in Platte County District Court on illegal possession of marijuana. He and Bruce McNall were arrested Aug. 23 at Kansas City International Airport after picking up a 125 pound load believed flown from Austin. McNall's charges were dismissed. Butler pleaded guilty before Judge John M. Yeaman and will be supervised by Kansas probation offices under a reciprocal agreement.

The Parent's Network of Lawrence forms to inform the public about alternative schooling in Lawrence. A kickoff public meeting is set for Oct. 19 from 3 to 5 PM at the Lawrence Public Library.
Julian Bond, Georgia state legislator and former four term Georgia House member, will address Kansas State University at a convocation in McCain Auditorium in Manhattan on November 20 at 8 p.m. He was elected to the Georgia House in 1965 and seated in 1967 after a Supreme Court ruling.

James Dillard a Kansas University student returns to Douglas County District Court for a December 17 trial on battery charges for throwing a pie at a professor. His previous trial in September ended with a hung jury though he admitted throwing the pie. The jury must decide if pie throwing constitutes battery carrying up to a year in jail and a $2500 fine or both.
