Lawrence High Debaters Sweep Novice Tourney Victory

Lawrence High School juniors Wood Merrill and Miles Zimmerman won first place at the Fredonia Novice Debate Tournament after four prelims and the semifinals and finals. Seniors Mary Ludlow and David Paden also competed in the novice event. Coach Jayanne Angell accompanied the group. Three LHS teams joined the Atchison Open Tournament, posting nine wins and six losses overall. Tim Gilles and Nancy Taylor led experienced entries with four wins and one loss but were eliminated on speaker points. Other participants included Jeanne Elliott, Jim Kotas, Jim Collinson, and more from Lawrence.

KU Courses Emphasize Reading Writing and Arithmetic

Kansas University reports English and mathematics as top majors among juniors and seniors in the 1965-66 catalog. Over 660 of 1700 students chose these fields, with political science and zoology also popular. History chemistry psychology and sociology followed with 471 total.

Alumni Sessions Draw Over 1 000 For KU California Game

Kansas University Alumni Association events drew over 1 000 attendees in Berkeley for the KU California game weekend. Details include 160 at a Phoenix dinner, 170 at San Diego, 150 at Los Angeles, and 410 served at a pregame reception in Berkeley with about 100 more at a social hour. A Kansas City delegation flew in midweek.

Woman’s Condition Still Poor Following Wreck

Amanda Elms age 69 of 747 R T St remained in poor condition at Lawrence Memorial Hospital after a two car crash 22 miles northwest of Stull on a county road. Her husband Walter 71 escaped injury. She has a fractured hip and dislocated knee cap. Clifford Nichols 29 and his wife Bonnie 27 were injured minor, son Thomas 18 months bruised pelvis. Elms vehicle total loss Nichols vehicle $1000 damage. accident occurred about 7 p m Friday.

KU coeds nominate 32 candidates for carnival queen

Donna Giffin, KU freshman and daughter of Mr and Mrs Kenneth Giffin, is among 32 coeds nominated by living groups to reign as queen at the Saturday Student Union Activities carnival in the Kansas Union. Blaze on Broadway runs 7 to 11 PM with skits booths and queen election.

KU Centennial Anniversary Plans Highlight New Celebration

Prof. Kenneth Anderson outlined Kansas University's centennial plans during a Rotary meeting. The celebration will focus on the university's second century with events during April and commencement week including a special medallion, a university history, an opera about Carry Nation and a Saturday night banquet honoring distinguished alumni and faculty.

KU student welcomes twins in Lawrence

Jon Falls a 23-year-old KU zoology graduate student and his wife Judith welcomed fraternal twins at Lawrence Memorial Hospital after about 24 hours of labor. The boy weighed 5 pounds 13 ounces and the girl 5 pounds 2 ounces. The family lives on Route 2, Lawrence, and both parents and children were reported in good condition.

Perry Man Killed In Power Pole Accident Near Perry

Clarence LeRoy Tabbert 25 of Perry died after his dump truck struck a power pole on a county road near the Perry Dam site. A line fell on his foot as the truck left the road after the pole impact. Funeral services set for 2 pm Tuesday at Perry Methodist Church. Burial in Oak Ridge Cemetery Oskaloosa. Survivors include his wife Cara Lee and two daughters Regina and Julia, plus his parents sisters and grandparents.

KCC opposes Rock Island plan to drop Kansas City Fort Worth service

The Kansas Corporation Commission filed a protest with the Interstate Commerce Commission against Rock Island Railroad's plan to discontinue the Kansas City to Fort Worth line via Lawrence. Train No. 17 southbound and No. 18 northbound would be affected. Citizens may contact the KCC in Topeka or ICC in Washington to express support.

Amateur Beaman Ties For 11th At U S Open

Deane Beaman, an amateur golfer, said he expects poor shots since he does not play professionally. He fired a 290 total to finish tied for 11th in the U S Open.

E J Logsdon opens a new Lawrence Adult Education painting class at Lawrence High School from 7 30 to 9 30 p m Thursdays with KU art major Patricia Edwards teaching. Enrollment urged as classes start after a minimum sign up. Fall enrollment reaches 955. Federal aid for Douglas County schools under Title I totals 116287 20 with about 87000 for Lawrence schools. The Lawrence Luncheon Optimist Club sponsored a trip to Kansas City to attend the Kansas City Chiefs Boston Patriots game.
