Funeral held for Mrs R Falcon at West Baldwin Church with Rev McCullough. Lawrence Business College night school invites enrollment.
Four hundred fifty five suits of warm clothing donated by American boys to Belgian peers, raised through the American Boy-Belgian Boy relief fund. The Overdale freighter carried the gifts from New York on September 8, with distribution to start before winter under the Relief Commission in New York City. Total contributions reached about $1,138.25, with major support from the Burene Publishing Company.
Local Odd Fellows in Lawrence show strong interest in the upcoming grand lodge gathering in Topeka. Alfred Lawrence is named as Lawrence’s delegate to the encampment, with Frank Sauer and Ray Angney as regular delegates and Vanney Miller and W W Emmons as alternates. Mrs Bert Wiggins heads the Rebekahs in Lawrence as treasurer. J R Goodwill will join an encampment committee, while Marlboringly Cola Cream is noted as a local best for an advantage or disadvantage.
Topeka patrons show three reader groups non fiction readers and study clubs and fiction readers. Study clubs take most interest in war reading while non fiction patrons favor agriculture trades languages and political economy. Library holds about 50 000 volumes with poetry and standard news in demand and popular authors like Shakespeare Bryant Longfellow Whittier Dickens Thackeray Stevenson Poe well represented.
Denver hosts the eleventh annual convention of the International Dry-Farming Congress with President J. W. Mondell of Wyoming delivering the address. He notes European delegates absent due to the war and warns against gambling with nature while urging continued use of moisture conservation. It urges readers that regular use keeps head clean stomach sweet and bowels regular for months.
Tales from Lawrence recount visiting delegates from the Society of American Indians and a state college staffer, noting town hospitality and a push to enforce traffic rules. Police urge student drivers to dim front lights and obey Massachusetts Street regulations, as a Lawrence Business College plan for night classes commences October 4 with shorthand and typing courses.
Thirty three prisoners confined in the state prison appeared before the state board of corrections in Lansing for parole consideration. Three were eligible for parole on minimum sentences while the rest offered special reasons. Crimes ranged from burglary to second degree murder. Board members named were Charles M. Harger of Abilene J Porter of Kansas City and Mrs J Lilker of Cornell Grove.
Kansas National Guard officers start a three year correspondence course in military subjects at Topeka with major Alvarado Fuller and Captain W Seen two being in charge. After completion officers must take a tactical field problems course and demonstrate knowledge during annual maneuvers. Noncommissioned officers will receive a related program led largely by company commanders.
A public sale is advertised near Vinland and Baldwin City for Friday at 10 in the morning. Livestock include cows, bulls, a Durham and Guernsey, Duroc hogs, a thoroughbred bitch, and sows with piglets plus two horses and a variety of farming implements such as harnesses plows wagons and mowers. The ad promises a clean sweep with many other items to be offered, conducted by owner W. Hazen and auctioneers Clark and Clark, with a free lunch served by Vinland church ladies.
