Mrs Schirra Keeps Vigil At Home After Liftoff

In Houston Mrs Walter Schirra Jr wife of the astronaut kept vigil at home after his launch into orbit. Roy Wallack said the liftoff was beautiful and reassuring. The Schirras' son Walter Marty III 12 looked forward to watching with family and a school principal planned to allow him to stay home. The Schirras’ mother Mrs James L Holloway and other relatives attended.

Governor Names Wescoe to Kansas Advisory Commission

Gov John Anderson announced the four year appointment of W Clarke Wescoe Kansas University chancellor to the state Advisory Commission on Institutional Management in Topeka. Dr A L Olsen of the Winter Veterans Administration Hospital Topeka also joined the group. Wescoe succeeds Fred S Montgomery of Lawrence whose term expired.

New Minneapolis Paper Suspends Its Operation

The Minneapolis Herald a five day daily paper started May 1 suspended operations Tuesday. Business manager Philip Brown said officials hope to resume publication soon. The paper began during the Minneapolis Star and Tribune strike and cites a Teamsters Union severance clause as a reason. The Herald had offered stock to the public.

7000 Fish Distributed to Kansas Farms and Ponds

John A. Golden received the Superior Club Leadership citation from Sertoma president Arthur Heck at a Tuesday night meeting in the Hotel Eldridge. The Lawrence Sertoma Club earned the Superior Club Award for outstanding achievement by Sertoma International. J. D. King outlined Memorial Stadium expansion plans at Kansas University, with E. J. Allison introducing the speaker.
