The Kansas Supreme Court affirmed Jimmy Jermal Netherland's first degree felony murder and related charges for the 2011 killing of Topeka lawyer Natalie Gibson during an attempted holdup behind her home. The court rejected his claim of insufficient evidence.
Salazar and McKinnis families sue the Kansas City police department nine officers two detectives and two anonymous men alleging suffering and punitive damages. The suits claim improper arrest and use of force during a May 22 2014 traffic stop that led to McKinnis death with autopsy citing positional asphyxia and resuscitation efforts. Trials tentatively set for 2017 with discovery underway and officials denying wrongdoing.
