The Associated Press reports a total solar eclipse seen across the Atlantic with observers in planes above clouds. The sun vanished for about nine minutes as Bailey's Beads appeared, leaving a corona around the moon while dawn turned to night below.
Prof Russell L Wiley announces four Lawrence students in the 114 piece Kansas University concert band Ward Sample Annaley Nickum Winston Grantham and Robert Isle plus plans for a winter concert January 17. The KU marching band will appear at the Memorial Stadium pre game ceremonies for the KU Boston University football game with head drum major Kenneth Heist and assistant Johnny Woody.
A house painter Willard J. Beckstrom confessed to his father, guiding diggers to an old basement excavation where the body of 11 year old Jean Pensyl was found, buried under Holland Cemetery soil three weeks after her death from leukemia in Holland Minnesota. Beckstrom, 36, stole the body from the cemetery and offered no explanation to police. His mother expressed disbelief, while his attorney warned of commitment proceedings as Minnesota authorities pursue fugitive warrants.
The annual Broom Caravan will visit Lawrence next Wednesday and Thursday under the Lawrence Lions Club. Proceeds go to the Kansas Foundation for the Blind with brooms brushes and doormats sold 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to 8 30 p.m. Thursday at 9th and Mass. Streets.
Winter Chevrolet at 738 N H St hosts a today event for Chevrolet's new Corvair the first small car from the Big Three. About 3 000 attendees expected despite rain with peak turnout 8 to 9 a m. Corvair features a rear air cooled six cylinder 80 hp engine and two minute warm up.
Funeral services will be at 2 p m Saturday in Dallas for Capt W Elza Stone 47 killed when his Braniff airliner exploded and crashed in Texas He lived at 131 Classen Drive Dallas and will be buried there Survivors include his widow and daughter James his mother Mrs H V Stone and sister Mrs Harold Pontius of 505 Miss St along with brothers Clayton Stone of 514 Utah St and Orville Stone of Dallas
The 1959 Douglas County CROP drive launches Sunday with a 2:30 p.m. kickoff at First Methodist Church. The county aims to raise 4000 dollars to fund 600 tons of government surplus food for overseas distribution by Christian workers. Donations support food delivery to the hungry via Church World Service and partner denominations.
Rosh Hashanah starts at sundown marking the 10 day period ending with Yom Kippur on Oct. 12. Forest Evashevski the head football coach at the State University of Iowa says he will resign when his current contract ends. He joined Iowa in 1952 and led the Hawkeyes to the front ranks of the Big Ten after receiving a 10 year deal in 1953.

He said rain should end by morning with temperatures in the 70s and that only the Coffeeville band cancelled due to travel logistics.
