Aid bill seen easing college costs for students nationwide
Aid officers say the Higher Education Amendments of 1998 will lower student loan rates to 7.46 percent, raise the Pell Grant maximum to 4500, and spur competition in lending led by Sallie Mae. KU and Baker University officials cite continued, uneven funding but welcome program changes that may speed loan disbursement and reduce borrower costs. The bill, passed 96 to 0 in the Senate, awaits signature by President Clinton and reflects expected appropriations guidance from Congress.
