KU sororities meet fire code in four houses

Hijackers refuse to free all hostages in Bangladesh siege

In Dacca today the Japanese Red Army hijackers hovered the jetliner over the airport as negotiations resumed with Bangladesh officials. A deadline passed without incident. The group demanded 6 million dollars in ransom and the release of six Japanese prisoners in exchange for 141 hostages. They offered to free 58 and keep 83 for safe passage to another destination. A Bangladesh spokesman said one element remained unresolved.

Hijacked JAL DC8 Crew Swap Near Dhaka Runway Standoff

The hijackers of a Japan Air Lines DC8 and a sister plane halted near Dhaka airport as a convoy and fire trucks blocked the runway. Negotiators promised freed comrades would be brought to planeside with lights for identification. Japan Air Lines had demanded ransom and nine Japanese prisoners on a Paris to Tokyo flight.

Man jailed on charges in knifing in Lawrence

Bruce S. Stellwagen, 26, held in Douglas County jail on $60,000 bond awaiting arraignment for knifing a woman and her child. Police say he surrendered Friday afternoon at a south Lawrence apartment complex after the attack occurred minutes earlier. The victims, Lillian Newman, 26, and her daughter Danielle, 5, were hospitalized in fairly good condition.
