Kansas University Chancellor Laurence Chalmers told AAUP members he does not want collective bargaining but cannot rule out its possibility to secure adequate salaries. He argued bargaining may reallocate funds, raise tuition, and increase student loads, while stressing student involvement and governance need expansion.
British visitors tour the Chinese legation as Mao era propaganda is displayed in a photo exhibit. It showcases Chairman Mao and Lin Piao with optimistic captions while praising socialist progress and acupuncture. Signs at Kansas University were peeling as officials planned systematic removal of all papers. Rainfall in southern Douglas County fell short of norms. The Worden station logged 2.93 inches in September, 0.58 below normal, leaving the area 3.43 inches behind year to date with 26.31 inches.
Emile Gerald Meyer Jr. of Metairie Louisiana posted 1000 bond on unlawful possession of marijuana. A trial is scheduled for 10 30 a m October 29 in Douglas County Court. Meyer was arrested after a report of suspected marijuana harvesting near Lawrence city limits. Two juveniles with him were released.

Marin County grand jury charges Stephen M. Bingham and six San Quentin inmates with five counts of murder and related conspiracies in the August prison riot that left George Jackson and five others dead. Bingham is also wanted on a federal unlawful flight charge.
A British soldier was shot dead on the Ardoyne edge as troops fired rubber bullets at stone-throwing youths. Two snipers were wounded and rushed to a hospital. Defense Secretary Carrington warned of tougher action against terrorists using automatic weapons and a bazooka.

Terry Clark of 502 West 14th says his apartment was entered between 11 am and noon Thursday through an unlocked window, with jewelry valued over 2100 dollars stolen including five rings and two brooches. Peter F. Klammer and Gregory A. Busby of 905 Emery Road report a Wednesday afternoon break in through a window, with stereo equipment, lamps, a leather checkbook cover, and several typewriters totaling values around 385 dollars.
