KU housing course offers start to finish build experience

KU students from architectural engineering, led by associate professor Clay Belcher, are building a $90,000 1,200 square foot home east of Lawrence at 2732 Ann Court to gain hands on insight into construction. Freshman David Mier calls it better than textbooks as peers handle financing, scheduling, and owner decisions while observing plumbers, electricians, and carpenters. Construction began in August and should finish in about a month with profits kept for KU's program. Trinity Development manages the project with Payless Cashways, Lithonia Lighting, Star Signs, Colorport, and University National Bank providing support.

Douglas County GOP asks DA candidates to answer questionnaires

The Douglas County Republican Central Committee designed questionnaires for six candidates for the soon vacated district attorney post. Answers are due Thursday and will be mailed to 102 precinct committeemen and committeewomen to judge candidates on changes in the DA office plea bargaining views top issues and strengths. The panel hopes for a fair, well informed decision, with the resulting responses to guide the upcoming committee meeting.

Douglas County GOP to nominate district attorney replacement

The Douglas County Republican Central Committee will convene at 7 30 p m on December 15 at the Lawrence Senior Center to nominate a successor to the remaining two years of Jerry Wells term. Six candidates compete including three Wells aides Mark Knight Rick Trapp and Martin Miller two Lawrence lawyers John Chappell and Gerald Little and Greg Hough an assistant in the U S Attorney s office in Topeka. Voters are 51 precinct committeemen and 51 precinct committeewomen of the county GOP.

Senate hopes rise as House approves GATT expansion

The Clinton administration pivots to winning Senate support after the House passed a sweeping 124 nation trade accord. Treasury Secretary Lloyd Bentsen hailed the bipartisan vote but warned of a tough, crowded path to final passage. House tally was 288 to 146 with 167 Democrats and 121 Republicans supporting the pact.

Stamp price hike eyed as January increase looms

The independent Postal Rate Commission is to decide on a three cent rise to 32 cents for first class stamps as part of a 10.3 percent overall mail rate increase. If approved, the change could take effect January 1 with timing set by the postal board at its December 6 Tampa meeting or a subsequent session.
