Kansas and Missouri colleges start food pantries
Kansas and Missouri colleges join a growing number of schools opening food pantries to help students cope with rising higher education costs. Kansas University and the University of Missouri began this effort years ago, with Emporia State and Washburn starting pantries this month and Pittsburg State opening one in October. In Missouri, UMKC plans a pantry in March. Tyler Huddleston, Emporia State’s student body president, recalls a friend who could not eat and left school, highlighting the pantry need. The Emporia State Center for Student Involvement surveyed students, finding 42 percent had skipped meals due to lack of funds.
