Apalachin underworld meet convictions overturned

The U S Court of Appeals reversed conspiracy convictions for 20 men at the Apalachin gathering on November 14, 1957, citing insufficient evidence. The ruling, written by Judge J Edward Lumbard, dismissed the conspiracy count. perjury charges against three defendants were not acted on.

Dockings Won't Return Here After Term Ends

Gov. George Docking returned from South America and said he has no plans for after his January term end. He denied plans to resettle in Lawrence, noting mudslinging there, and said he may pursue business offers while staying in Kansas. Anderson defeated Docking in Douglas County 11,9 to 5,826 and carried Lawrence 8,066 to 4,072.

College Student Slain in Portland Park

Larry Ralph Peyton, 19, of Portland and a Portland State College student, was stabbed to death in a wooded West Hills park. Beverly Allen, 19, of Port Townsend, Wash., a Washington State College student, is missing and feared kidnapped after visiting the Peyton family over Thanksgiving.

KU Play Invites 7000 Students to See Greensleeves Magic

Nearly 7000 Douglas County school children receive invitations to KU Children's Theater shows in Murphy Hall. The six performances Dec 7 to Dec 10 include a family night and feature Jed Davis directing Greensleeves Magic, a fantasy for ages six to twelve. Lawrence Weather Scare Brings Wind Gusts and Brief Power Outage

An unseasonable storm caused high winds and tornado sightings across Kansas, with Lawrence experiencing gusts up to about 50 mph. Civil Defense units monitored tunnels and roads from 8 to 10:30 p.m. A brief power outage occurred along 21st Street, quickly resolved by Kansas Power and Light crews. The city recorded a high of 71 degrees earlier, a record surpassing the 65-degree 1941 mark, then cold air moved in with a 28-degree morning low.
