Protest boat leaves whale hunt area near Neah Bay
The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society has withdrawn its two protest ships from waters off Neah Bay after eight weeks. The 95 foot Sirenian departed last week and the 180 foot Sea Shepherd III left Wednesday but will stay nearby to rejoin if the Makah tribe proceeds with its gray whale hunt. Makah President Keith Johnson says the move may calm tensions. The tribe, cleared to whale since Oct 1, has not yet hunted in its cedar canoe, planning a ceremonial harpoon followed by rifle fire from chase boats to emphasize humanity.
