London reports Britain's Mediterranean fleet contacted two Italian battleships with a large cruiser and destroyer force at extreme range. The Italians reportedly altered course and retired toward their base as the British pursued. No immediate outcome details were available.
In a House of Commons debate Arthur Greenwood says Britain has given a clean breast of its deficiencies to the United States and expects America to become a second arsenal. Ernest Bevin warns of another large call up for June. Arthur Purvis notes increased American aid in 1941.
Leavenworth reports that Kansas draftees and volunteers under the selective service act may miss Thanksgiving in 1940. Recruits at Fort Leavenworth reception center spent last Thursday at home, and Thanksgiving at the center will be Thursday there.
The American Federation of Labor reaffirmed labor’s rights to collective bargaining and set three wartime principles. Universal service obligation for defense industries under democratic conditions, labor representation on policy bodies and draft boards, and maintenance of labor standards and social welfare under emergency conditions.

Propaganda accuses the United States of trade favors for Jewish merchants and demands unity to defend Mexican sovereignty. Some fear anti American agitation from German and Italian factions if the stance continues.
Washington reports congressional backers of reduced federal spending push for lean budgets after President Roosevelt signals cuts to non-defense outlays. Analysts estimate potential savings around 500 million dollars next fiscal year, roughly ten percent of current expenditures excluding fixed charges and defense. Senator Adams calls 500 million a material saving despite large overall costs. Current year spending is about 13 billion, with official cash and authorizations near 20 billion. new budget rumored at 15 billion or more.

British air ministry reports a heavy raid on Turin damaging the royal arsenal and factories while attacks on Berlin and Cologne targeted armaments. London and southern England endured brief alerts with no major damage as axis raids diminished for a second night.

Two men suffered facial head and hand burns when accumulated gas in the basement of Laurence Woodruff’s new Westwood Drive residence exploded. Harry Moorman and Walter Quisenberry were treated. Moorman released, Quisenberry remained hospitalized. Fire damage estimated at $500.
In Sofia on November 27 observers foresee intensified efforts by Germany and Soviet Russia to control the Danube mouth. Bulgaria, backed by Russia and neutral in the European war, welcomed pledges that its integrity would be respected. War Minister Daskaloff praised Bulgaria’s favorable position and announced a return to normal blackouts. Diplomats expect renewed Danube control talks in Bucharest to reveal concessions. Soviet diplomats held key meetings with Bulgarian and Russian officials, signaling Moscow’s influence in Sofia.

Wichita police and state attorney general agents seized more than 1100 pints of assorted liquors in raids on two Sedgwick County night clubs. Two persons were arrested on liquor law violation charges.
Kansas and 15 other states observe Thanksgiving with closures and family gatherings. The Kansas-Colorado State football game at Memorial Stadium closes the Jayhawks season at 2 pm.
The Lawrence Elks lodge holds a memorial service Sunday at 3 PM at the clubhouse. Six members will have biographies read: W. B. Roberts Charles M. O Bryan J. W. Shaw C C Schaake Paul A. Dinsmoor and W W Hutton. J H Cohn will deliver the eulogy and William Reilly of Leavenworth will give the memorial address.

Douglas County Tuberculosis association asks residents with letters and seals to drop money for stamps at the gas office to avoid return mail.
