Modern Pilgrims mark first Thanksgiving re enactment in Miami church

The observance in a Miami church featured 100 modern Pilgrims in period costume as the Rev. Harold Davenport gave a ceremonial thanks. Elsewhere, descendants of New England tribes mourn changes, Abnakis gain tribal status in Vermont, and Creek Pow Wow in Alabama. Presidents Ford and Carter joined in dinners. city parades and charity meals fed thousands. A Tallgrass Prairie exhibit opens December 4 at the Watkins Museum showcasing historic photos and current views of the prairie.

United Fund reaches 94.4 percent of goal as divisions post gains

Secretary Betty Pearson reports the United Fund has raised 224,264 of 237,480 dollars. Divisions in business industrial residential professional KU and Combined Federal Campaign improve totals while city county and school districts show no gains. city division exceeds its goal.

Ford to Work on Budget After Thanksgiving Retreat

President Ford returns to budget work for fiscal 1978 after a Thanksgiving at Camp David with family. Budget Director James T. Lynn, Chief of Staff Richard Cheney and five advisers fly in for sessions today and Saturday. He plans to submit the budget to Congress on January 17, with fiscal year 1978 starting October 1. Ford spent the four day holiday weekend at the mountain retreat, enjoying a prebreakfast swim, golf practice, and skeet shooting, and spoke holiday greetings to his Grand Rapids high school football teammates. Sixteen relatives joined Ford for Thanksgiving dinner prepared by Navy stewards.

Douglas County taxes due with three week window

Douglas County residents have just over three weeks to pay the first half of 1976 personal property and real estate taxes. The county treasurer began mailing statements on November 5. First half due by December 20. if half is not paid, the entire half becomes due with interest. Real estate taxes mailed separately have deferred terms but incur interest on delinquent amounts after December 20.

ICC finds Tonga rail abandonment not harmful

An ICC environmental threshold study concludes aband on the Union Pacific branch from Lawrence to Tonganoxie would not cause serious adverse rural development effects. Traffic has declined, with 218 cars in 1974, 92 in 1975, and 21 in the first four months of this year, and grain shipments dropping sharply. The study notes no significant socio economic impact and suggests selling the roadbed for public use if approved.

Controversy over VOA independence from USIA movement grows

Washington AP reports journalists and broadcasters at the Voice of America push to convince President elect Jimmy Carter that VOA should operate independently from the United States Information Agency. Supporters say bureaucratic control stifles news and opinion overseas while an anonymous VOA official notes a petition for independence has gained signatures this week. Carter has not indicated his stance on VOA independence.
