The Northwestern National Life Family Economics Bureau reports 1971 job opportunities down across fields. On campus recruiting shrank, graduates took first offers and many found work outside their majors or in part time roles while seeking career positions.
Navy Lt A Michael Lewis awarded the Navy Achievement Medal at Pearl Harbor Hawaii ceremony for aiding in a fuel spill cleanup. He helped recover 54,600 gallons of fuel and prevented contamination of surrounding property. Lewis is a 1968 graduate of Kansas University in Lawrence Kansas.
AFL CIO President George Meany, 77, hospitalized after chest pains, was reported resting comfortably. Dr. Marvin Fuchs said a possible coronary artery spasm caused the episode but Meany’s vital signs were normal and he will stay in hospital several days due to stress.
Tulsa residents learn Judge James H. Meredith of the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals was named to replace Judge Allen E. Barrow in the $15 million Mullendore life insurance suit. The widow of E C Mullendore III sues to collect three $5 million policies issued on her husband before his death at his Osage County ranch.
The USS Command announced 13 more Army units totaling 3,233 troops will withdraw from Vietnam as part of Nixon’s plan to reduce troop strength to 139,000 by end of January. The moves include a battalion from the 101st Airborne and nine aviation companies with about 100 helicopters. Present strength is about 180,000.
Hundreds of Lawrence residents shopped early as downtown stores opened the Christmas buying season with brisk early traffic. Managers reported strong sales, with early specials and shoppers buying decorations, clothing, gifts, and color TV sets as residents anticipate a holiday mood.
At Haskell Indian Junior College Dean Quiring announced steps to end mandatory closing hours. A Student Court will hear misconduct cases while dorms may keep or drop hours. Students will vote by dorm on retaining hours and move options, with a Chief Justice to be chosen by five Senate members.
Senator Fred Harris will chair a Dec. 4 hearing at the Grand Ole Opry House on his bill to establish an American Folk Life Foundation. Witnesses may include Roy Acuff Bill Monroe Billy Edd Wheeler and Minnie Pearl as the live WSM broadcast records the session.
At Fort Riley Kansas soldiers will receive four 9 by 12 foot black and white projection screens funded by VOLAR for post service clubs. The first shipments arrive by December 28. A color 15 by 20 foot screen is being requested for the Custer Hill Service Club from the Army.
Police logs show three vehicle collisions occurred earlier and listed as station reports filed by the involved drivers. Officers on duty today say no collisions occurred on Timhaglyinie Day in the city.
A 25,000 man South Vietnamese offensive into eastern Cambodia enters its fifth day with a ranger thrust into Mimot rubber plantation. Mimot, 25 miles southwest of Saigon, marks a key North Vietnamese staging area. South Vietnamese forces expect heavy fighting within five to seven days as North Vietnamese units pull back. American helicopter support is limited to reconnaissance and gunships.
The Warren Mortuary will open its new facilities at 120 W 18th with a ribbon cutting at 11 a m Saturday. Lt Gov Reynolds Shultz and Eugene Amos of the Kansas Funeral Directors Assn will cut the ribbon. State Sen Arden Booth will be master of ceremonies. A guided tour will follow the open house and refreshments.
The Associated Press reports the Thanksgiving traffic death toll reached 188 as snow drizzle and fog affected motorists in the midsection. The count started at 6 p.m. Wednesday and ends at midnight Sunday, with clearer skies in the Northeast after Thursday’s snowstorm.
A Thanksgiving power cut at a huge college football showdown disrupted the second quarter as a stray squirrel damaged a transformer on Peterson Road in northwest Lawrence. Ten homes lost power briefly while fans switched to radios and the KP&L crew repaired the line. The outage ended before the third quarter and no one was seriously harmed.
