German high command threw air forces into action and buried tanks in groups as the Red army pressed the Stalingrad front. The Russians widened an encircling trap while German casualties neared 250,000. 48,000 dead and 51,000 captured were reported.
General MacArthur reports Allied bombers yesterday sank two troop laden Japanese destroyers and damaged a third near Buna Gona while Japanese forces fought back in a 12 mile jungle defense. Beaten in the air and on the coast, Japanese ships and troops faced relentless Allied air and sea pressure.
London reports the German high command stating a broad Russian offensive across a wide front west and northwest of Moscow and toward Stalingrad. They claim Russians attacked near Toropets and Vyazma, with pockets created and counterattacks erasing gains. Moscow dispatches say Germans will not retreat from Stalingrad as fighting rages in the Don bend.

The United States army troops packed Westminster Abbey for a solemn Thanksgiving service the first time outsiders used the cathedral in 900 years. Washington reports farm conservation benefit payments in 1948 may be reduced to about 400 million dollars, 100 million below the half billion authorized and 50 million below this year's appropriation. Agriculture officials cited higher farm prices and income rising 85 percent, while budget officials favored large cuts. They proposed 200 million for conservation practices and 200 million for acreage compliance to fit war food needs.
Paris radio broadcast claimed a United States military mission landed in Dakar to assume control of naval units and coastal batteries with no allied confirmation. Washington announced Brig. Gen. Asa N. Duncan of the United States Air Corps staff in Europe was lost at sea after a November 17 forced down off northern France.

Expect no moisture to interrupt Thanksgiving travel as a cool spell lingers in Kansas. Ice covered northern areas overnight with another cold night ahead. Goodland near 19 degrees and Wichita topped at 52 yesterday. Weatherman Flora says moisture from the north system did not reach Kansas and there is enough moisture to carry wheat through winter.
Haskell Indians meet Lafayette high of St. Joseph Mo this afternoon at 245 in Haskell stadium. It is the last football game scheduled to be played in Lawrence this season.
Kansas City Kansas workers walked out briefly in a dispute over wages for women filling male jobs. Police mediator Captain Stanley Beatty said the company conceded to the union demands and workers returned to work in the late afternoon. Women previously earned 59 cents while men earned 72 cents per hour.
Five men used gangster tactics to hijack twelve tons of coffee from a truck near the Holland tunnel in Jersey City. They forced driver Frank Borowy to load the cargo onto a second truck and bound him before abandoning him in Long Island.
Neighbors gather at Mrs. Christy’s to shuck corn from 12 to 15 acres, hauling to elevators in Lawrence. Ed Steele Howard Phillips and Glen Cox provided trucks. A large yield is reported with many locals helping. Mrs. Christy to relocate to El Dorado with daughter Janice. She previously taught in Douglas county schools.
Registration for gas rationing books will be held tomorrow and Saturday on the main floor of the Community building. The Parent Teachers Council runs the sign up for those who failed to register on regular days. Hours are 9 to 12 and 1 to 5. Truck operators with war necessity certificates from the ODT may sign up for truck gas coupons. Car owners must bring tire serial numbers and vehicle registration or title. The regular rationing office will be closed except for 11:30 Friday when the city panel issues tire and auto certificates.
Salina Kansas November 26 annual Thanksgiving dinner commemorates 1871 when William Jones and James Mortimer families first shared plum pudding made from English recipe. Miss Gertrude E. Schott aged 59 of near Worden dies after a two car crash on highway 50N two miles west of Baldwin Junction. The other driver Lee Harrison 28 of Ottawa says a blinded sight from a single bright headlight contributed to the near head on collision. Harrison sustained minor injuries and his wife, and two teachers from his school district, escaped unhurt. Funeral plans set for Rumsey funeral home with burial at Oak Hill cemetery. Schott leaves a sister Emma Schott of St Louis and two brothers Hugo near Worden and Otto of Lawrence.
Senate Majority Leader Barkley schedules a steering committee session to lay out the rest of the term. The panel will consider two disputed bills: a 300 million education grants measure and overtime pay for federal workers. Southern Democrats seek a vote on the education aid bill amid party tensions.
