County court caseloads show mixed trends amid economy
Prosecutors report year to year swings in case numbers with 1,900 filings in 2009 and 1,989 in 2008. Criminal filings peaked at 2,365 in 2006, while serious offenses like robberies with multiple suspects have risen and require complex prosecutions. By October, Lawrence police logged about 2,500 fewer calls than 2010, with declines in accidents and offense reports. Civil and mortgage foreclosure activity rises in recent years, suggesting some economic improvement in Douglas County as civil filings near 675 for the year.

Kansas Hunters Feeding the Hungry helps feed 225000 meals
DeRossett said 225000 meals were provided to hungry Kansans last season through the Kansas Hunters Feeding the Hungry program. Venison donated by hunters is processed at $65 per carcass by locker plants, with Good Shepherd Thrift Store in Tonganoxie among 160 participating groups. The effort, started in 2001, aims to convert deer into food for those in need and to offer an outlet for hunters.

Thanksgiving meal volunteers give time to deliver hope
In Lawrence and Eudora, about two dozen volunteers prep and bag meals at Mace Li's for Thanksgiving Day. The crew, led by Engstrom, works from morning rush to noon, delivering boxes of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, and more to dozens of families, including Brad Stoll and relatives who’ve helped for years.
