Film director Louis Malle, known for Atlantic City and Au Revoir Les Enfants, died of lymphoma on Thanksgiving evening at his home with wife Candice Bergen by his side. The obituary notes his French and American film work and influence.

Lawrence resident Tracy Wieden logged seven hours of shopping and 60 miles of driving as she began her holiday spree. She spent about 500 dollars at Wal Mart and filled the Plymouth Voyager with gifts including cabbage patch kids and holiday items. She called the trip about a quarter of the way complete. The Air Line Pilots Association weighs a last offer as the cooling-off deadline passes. ALPA represents about half of FedEx’s 2,950 pilots, with the union warning delays could affect 250,000 to 300,000 packages daily during the holiday period. FedEx says operations will continue with minimal impact and cites a $300 million three-year cost for the requested raises and rule changes.
Lawrence school board will consider a policy allowing students from outside the district to apply for admission tuition free on a space available basis. Morning session discussed annual enrollment, May 31 final decisions, and prior state aid implications. Superintendent Azinger supports using nonresident students to boost financing. The policy requires principal approval for expelled or suspended students and outlines a May final determination with space availability guiding admissions.
