Brush Fire Near City Reaches Kaw River

A several hour brush fire burned fields two miles west and one mile north of Lawrence Thursday evening. Deputy John Wolfe said sandy ground prevented firefighting equipment from reaching the area as the fire spread to the Kaw River bank and eastward toward a trailer home, but yard clearance kept the structure safe. The blaze apparently started from a match or cigarette tossed from a car.

Elmer Ousdahl Named President of Kansas Officials Council

Elmer Ousdahl, in his first district commissioner term in Douglas County, was elected president of the Kansas Officials Council for 1961. The group, comprising all county officials in the state, chose him at the Wichita convention where he also served as convention committee chairman.

Western Oregon Flood Strikes Coast Toll No Casualties Yet

Rain swelled streams across western Oregon forcing evacuations in scattered areas. Mill Creek submerged Turner as floods reached waist deep streets. Walsett reported 6.41 inches in 24 hours with 32 inches in two weeks. Roads including U S 101 and U S 22 blocked. no casualties reported.

Kennedy baby birth delays plans for Palm Beach retreat

John F Kennedy Jr was born by caesarean at Georgetown Hospital after a consented delivery earlier than expected. Mrs Kennedy recovered, John F Kennedy Jr was named John Fitzgerald Kennedy Jr and will stay in the hospital incubator for a day or two. Mrs Kennedy smiled at nurses and Caroline Kennedy, age three, waits at home in Washington.

Accident Toll Rises During Thanksgiving Holiday

The Thanksgiving weekend saw a rising toll with 137 traffic fatalities on the second day and 22 deaths from fires since Thanksgiving eve. Other accidents added 34 more deaths, bringing total fatalities to 193 as traffic and fires claimed multiple lives in various incidents.

CROP urges grain and animal donations via sales barns

Donors can take an animal to any Kansas sales barn and designate proceeds to CROP. The barn forwards the payment to the state CROP office in Topeka or to Harold Flanders, county treasurer in Lawrence. Campaign workers will issue authorization slips to transfer stored grain to CROP.
