Lawrence Seeks New Industrial Sites Amid Development Gaps

Local business leaders say Lawrence lacks attractive building locations and an usable inventory to lure a large 150 to 200 employee firm. Potential sites include a 144 acre parcel north of town near the airport with major utility needs and traffic concerns, and a 400 acre Farmland Industries site southeast near Highway 10 with rail access and existing city utilities.

Lawrence weighs Farmland site versus airport for industrial growth

City and county debate future use of the Farmland Industries site and a nearby airport site west of East Hills Business Park. Federal funds may cover cleanup and a substantial land portion could be developed. Both sites offer 100 acre development potential but differ in utilities, flood risk, and infrastructure costs. Lawrence seeks a balanced mix of bio science and large‑employment industries to attract major manufacturers.
