Jill Brungardt at Westlake Hardware reports strong ice scraper and sandbag sales as the county reports several accidents and cautions motorists.
A Kansas Turnpike Authority and Kansas Highway Patrol report says a state trooper, Gary Haak, shot and killed Jon Paul Chiopelas 19 of Elgin Illinois after a confrontation on theTurnpike west of the West Lawrence Interchange. The auto camera recorded the incident from stop to finish including a knife. Chiopelas died before 4 am Tuesday at the scene. His father Peter Chiopelas of Chicago questioned the authorities account.
The Kansas Board of Regents reports a 0.9 percent fall drop but projects a 6 percent enrollment surge in fall 1995 across KU and five other state universities. Regents officials expect a wave of high school graduates by 1995, with total system enrollment rising 0.5 percent in 1994 and higher gains thereafter, stressing budgets and capacity at KU and K-State.
