Gov. Hugh Carey urged the legislature to approve a 206 million dollar increase in New York City taxes to back a 5.9 billion package for three years. A deadlock persisted over a plan linked to President Ford's aid, while a rally in Times Square highlighted public backing for federal relief.
Lawrence water supply sodium level rose slightly over the weekend then fell from a week ago to 127 parts per million. Three hurt in Sunday auto mishap at Martin Park entrance northwest of Lawrence. Driver Danny L. Copp 22 said gravel caused a slide into a ditch. Copp suffered cuts and was hospitalized. passengers Frances S. Scrivo 18 and Loyd R. Wisdom 19 were identified.
The Lawrence City Commission will discuss a Consumer Affairs Assn request to license roofers at 7 p.m. Tuesday in city hall. The panel also tackles 312 loan area expansion, sidewalk work on Iowa Street, sewer bids for Lawrence Presbyterian Manor, and various zoning, traffic and public works items.
Sgt Frank B Breese son of Mrs Eugene F Breese of Lawrence Kansas earned the Master Technician Award in electronics maintenance at McConnell AFB Kansas for outstanding repair work on aircraft and missile systems. Airman J C Andrew Galloway son of Mr and Mrs Franklin D Galloway of Lawrence Kansas received the U S Air Force Commendation Medal at Eielson AFB Alaska for meritorious service as an environmental support specialist at Travis AFB California.
Dolly L. Dill, 14, of Emporia, was struck and killed by a Santa Fe freight train about five miles southwest of Emporia. Her companion Regina Thurston, 11, escaped unharmed after the train engineer sounded the whistle repeatedly.
City officials will hold public hearings in December on Housing and Community Development Act allocations for next year. The two hearings dates will be set at Tuesday's city commission meeting, with the community development plan due in February. The Haskell Loop has earmarked most of 1975 funds including 242 255 for land, plus 160 000 for housing rehab and 68 400 for administration.
The U S Postal Service faces a seven million dollar daily deficit and may halt Saturday deliveries or curb special delivery if cost reductions fail. Bailar previously urged strong measures and rural post office closures to save about 100 million annually, a plan likely to provoke congressional and rural opposition.
