Lawrence City Commission tightens fireworks rules
The Lawrence City Commission approved a 4-1 ordinance limiting fireworks explosions from 7 am to 11 pm on July 2 3 and 4 with Charles Fisher dissenting. The county may limit sales to July 2 4 but not explosions. The meeting also covered plans for a permanent blood collection center, new street lights, and various approvals and deferred items.

Grant Plans Topic For Local Meet
A project action committee of downtown businessmen met at the Ramada Inn to discuss using a 350000 federal grant for Lawrence's central business district. Preliminary plans by Robertson Peters and Williams propose rebuilding three intersections, two midstreet crossings, landscaping, lighting, and drainage. Project director Don Schaake invited 18 merchants and landowners to review the plan in the first session.

Dem chief among four indicted in Leavenworth drug case
Kansas City lawyer Louis Wagner along with James Harvey Bradley Bunchie White and Joyce Lee Martin were indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of smuggling amphetamine pills and other contraband into Leavenworth penitentiary in 1968. Wagner faces obstruction of a Justice Department investigation. FBI and Strike Force agents led the inquiry.
