43 Die as TWA Jet Burns on Rome Takeoff

A Boeing 707 operated as TWA 800 crashed after striking a road grader during takeoff at Fiumicino Airport Rome. Of 72 aboard 43 were killed and 8 of 29 survivors were in critical condition with 22 passengers and 7 crew among the survivors. The flight originated in Kansas City with stops in Chicago New York Paris and Milan before Rome en route to Athens and Cairo. The crash involved flames from a wheel assembly as the jet wavered and exploded.

Girl May Regain Use Of Her Mangled Arm

Deborah Hunter an 11 year old from Kansas City had her right arm nearly severed Friday when it was caught in a washing machine at an automatic laundry. Surgeons at Menorah Medical Center worked almost two hours to save the arm and reported her condition satisfactory.

Thousand Attend JFK Grave Tribute at Arlington

About 30000 Americans visited Arlington National Cemetery to honor John F Kennedy. Dignitaries, families, veterans and strangers filed past the grave, laying flowers and kneeling before the eternal flame in frigid dawn air. Rome airliner crash injures Shultz couple from Lawrence

The Journal-World reports Mr and Mrs O R Shultz of Route 3 Lawrence were aboard the TWA crash near Rome. They are in a Rome hospital in good condition with Shultz said to have broken a foot and Mrs Shultz burns on the legs. Several others including a Martin Chappler Ernest Havell Jones an American serviceman and two Ethiopian citizens were brought to hospitals with minor injuries as witnesses describe fuel leakage and explosions during the takeoff and crash sequence. Elisabeth Loretta Cartley is among the identified injured.

City workers fill forms for new job study plan

City employees number 218 in Lawrence are to return special questionnaires by Wednesday. Mild temperatures return after record lows in Lawrence

Lawrence areas see a warm up after a weekend freeze. Record low marks were set Friday through Sunday with lows of 13 on Friday 9 on Saturday and 16 on Sunday morning. By Sunday the high reached 53 and by 2 pm today 51 in the downtown district. The Weather Bureau forecast calls for more mild weather with tonight's lows 32 to 35 and Tuesday's high 50 to 55.
