Contractors bid on expansion of Lawrence High and West Junior High, with bids near $1.8 million. The lowest for Lawrence High ranged about $1.458 million from Lee and Bueltel. West High bid $218,000 from M. W. Watson. District shortfall about $76,885 after architect fees and related costs.
Betty Bond, 36, was found not guilty of voluntary manslaughter in the shooting death of her boyfriend Vincent Smelser after a three day trial in Douglas County District Court. Bond testified Smelser attacked her during a July 10 argument and moved toward her as she fired. The verdict came after about three hours of jury deliberation.
Lawrence water supply shows elevated sodium as river lows reduce dilution. Tests run around 120 ppm versus 40 ppm normal, with 140 ppm cited for a pregnant patient. Health officials say 200 ppm prompts physician alert and 250 ppm is an individual danger threshold.
