Three Programs Reviewed by School Board in District 497

The district reviewed the elementary physical education program, elementary Spanish, and the achievement and diagnostic center. Presenters detailed functions and goals, noting stabilization of Spanish staff and continued focus on reading writing and arithmetic. The board approved Lawrence High School affiliation with the Sunflower League and noted local rezoning and industrial zoning actions.

Thanksgiving Break Plans for District 497 and Haskell Institute

Schools in District 497 and John’s School will not hold classes Thursday and Friday for Thanksgiving. Classes resume Monday morning. Haskell Institute will miss Thursday classes. A morning parade a noon dinner a Powder Puff football game and a Powder Puff sock hop are planned. Classes resume Friday.

Public Tours At Two Fire Stations In Lawrence

Public tours will be held Sunday from 1 to 5 pm at Fire Station No. 1 at 745 Vt. St. and Fire Station No. 1 at 1839 Mass. St. Volunteers will explain the need for more firefighting capacity and discuss fixes in the city's 2.25 million bond issue, set for voter approval next Tuesday.

Deer a Factor In Odd Mishap Near Eudora on K-10

Two Kansas University students and two Emporia coeds were involved in a Tuesday night wreck about a mile west of Eudora on K-10. Deborah Thrune swerved to miss deer, lost control, and collided with Barton Kort and Douglas Thompson. Thrune's 1960 car was demolished. Kort’s vehicle sustained $650 damage. The Emporia women were uninjured.

County Officials Approve a Penalty Clause for Bridge Study

Douglas County Commissioners approve a six month completion penalty clause for an engineering study to locate a second Lawrence bridge over the Kaw River. Schlup Becker Brennan engineers oppose penalties. Study cost 32000 dollars split 50 50 by county and State Highway Commission.

Auto and Truck Collision at 15th and Town Streets

A non injury crash occurred around 8 this morning at 15th and Town Streets. Wesley E. Brune, 78, of 943 Century Dr., and Shelby G. Graves, 27, of Kansas City, Missouri, collided causing $950 damage to Brune’s auto and $600 damage to Graves’ truck.

Lawrence police reported one theft and two vandalism incidents. Jack Moore of General Appliance Co. reported a portable color television set valued at 399 stolen from his store after 9 a.m. Tuesday. Bob Lewis of Shakey’s Pizza Parlor said vandals shattered a rear window causing 200 damage, and Della Morgan reported a rock destroyed a storm window causing 10 damage.

Air Taxi Service Set to Start From Lawrence

Lawrence to Kansas City air taxi service planned with three daily round trips using single engine planes initially. FAA approval allows operations down to 600 feet and schedules depend on Kansas City airline timetables. Man Pleads Guilty In Officer Threat Case

Thomas F. Breyley age 23 formerly of 905 Emery Rd pleaded guilty in District Court to two misdemeanors resisting arrest and attempting to strike a deputy sheriff on July 19. He received six months in county jail on each charge. A felony threat count with a .22 revolver was dropped after a plea offer. Deputy Jim Woods had gone to Breyley’s apartment to arrest an alleged deserter from the U S Army.
