Survivors say the TAP Boeing 727 landed too far down the runway and tried to take off before plunging 200 feet down an embankment and bursting into flames. The crash killed 130 of 164 aboard, with six of eight crew members dead and a government inquiry ordered.
Lawrence City Commission will review a .52 acre rezoning request by Dr. David Hiebert to change from RM-1 multi family to RO-1 residence office at Fourth and Arkansas. The plan aims to build doctors offices and follows earlier planning commission approval. The agenda also lists traffic parking proposals and park renaming.
Secretary of State Cyrus R. Vance arrived in Buenos Aires for a day of talks with human rights groups and Argentina’s military regime including President Videla. He also planned Brazil and Venezuela stops, and carried a list of 7,500 Argentines reported missing or jailed by rights groups.

Former CIA analyst Frank Snepp claims in his new book that the U.S. government and Ambassador Graham Martin leaked false information to journalists in Saigon predicting a bloodbath after South Vietnam fell. He names Keyes Beech George McArthur Robert Shaplen Bud Merrick and Malcolm Browne as reporters who were fed selective leaks.
