Vincent van Gogh's 1889 self-portrait, painted in an asylum and given to his mother, sold at auction for more than 71 million, the second highest van Gogh price and third overall auction record. The bid opened at 14 million, with three bidders, and ended with anonymous telephone bidders driving the final sale.
President Clinton pressed Japan to open markets and push rapid banking reform and a $196 billion stimulus as Tokyo tours with Prime Minister Obuchi.
