A tenant house on the H. E. H. Stoneback farm southwest of Lawrence burned last night around eight. Glenn Keister, an employee of Stoneback, and his family escaped with most personal effects saved. Lawrence fire department arrived at 8:05 but the blaze was already out of control.
Sir Edward Grigg told the House of Commons that Germany might invade Britain at any time as their triumphs fade. He said a large part of the Nazi army remains marshaled behind invasion ports and could strike soon.
Washington reports mobilization orders for about 40 000 additional national guardsmen from 16 states await President Roosevelt's signature. The plans call for the third and fourth increments to report by late December at Camp Robinson Arkansas and Fort Bliss Texas, with training for a year.
Ten Lawrence horsewomen under Mrs Nellie Anderson Wallace train twice weekly for a Christmas parade drill to be staged December 6. The unit will perform at Seventh, Eighth, Ninth and Tenth streets with pairs riding in matching costumes. President Roosevelt announced the resignation of Joseph E. Davies from his post as special assistant to the secretary of state. He said Davies would serve as chairman of the arrangements committee for the January 20 inauguration, a role Davies accepted.
German bombers struck the English midlands industrial area with heavy force. An axis raid over the English Channel involved an estimated 80 to 100 aircraft roiling northward toward the island, reported by Exchange Telegraph.
German big guns shelled the English coast from Cap Gris Nez as mist and storms limited air activity. British reports say raids reached Liverpool and the midlands while London had four alerts but no bombs dropped. A fire in the hull of the 35 000-ton battleship South Dakota at the New York Shipbuilding yard in Camden New Jersey caused dense smoke and eight workers to be slightly overcome by fumes. One was hospitalized but in satisfactory condition. Earlier reports said three men were missing as two alarms were sounded. the blaze was quickly controlled with little damage.

Three Kansas University students were treated at Watkins Memorial hospital after an intramural touch football game between Sigma Phi Epsilon and Phi Delta Theta. All injuries were concussions and bruises, none serious. Lindley Hines and Carl Kresse of Sigma Phi Epsilon and John Wells of Phi Delta Theta were admitted. Dr. Ralph J. Canuteson noted injuries were few given the number of players and intensity.
The armed British liner Samaria docked in New York from Liverpool via Halifax carrying 684 passengers including about 60 children and 409 Jewish refugees. Lifebelts were worn throughout the voyage. Mrs Ann Habrecht described a bomb incident affecting her 14 month old son, now en route to stay with sister Mrs Lily Norton in Miami. her husband serves with the Royal Engineers.
Directors of Atchison Topeka Santa Fe Railway declare a $1 a share dividend on common stock the first since 1937. Payment to be made December 27 with stock of record December 2. A regular $2.50 half yearly dividend on 5 percent preferred is payable February 1 to stock of record December 27.
In Topeka on November 19 four state draft appeal boards gathered at the statehouse to receive guidance from Kansas selective service officials. Adjutant General Milton R. McLean said local boards chiefly classify registrants and that appeals may be filed by brief only. No oral arguments will be held and decisions will be in closed session. Clerks must come from civil service lists with headquarters at Topeka Emporia Wichita and Great Bend.
Douglas county hunters expect a good quail season but factors may curb bag limits on opening day. Dense weeds and decaying grasses hinder dogs and scent while a mild spell keeps plants green. Twenty three stamps sold by noon mark a strong early interest as birds remain plentiful with open farms and cooperative efforts boosting protection and distribution.
Eight University of Kansas students compete for a silver loving cup in the campus problems speaking contest at 7:30 tonight in Fraser theater. Entrants drawn for speaking positions. judges include W E Sandelius A W Davidson and R A Heady with Robert Sullivan as chairman.

Winter returned to Lawrence this afternoon with a drizzle as a cold front moved through. The temperature rose to 61 around 1:30 PM and then dropped to 45 by 3:00 PM.
Census Bureau reports the total United States population including territories at 150 362 326 for April 1 count with up 8 6 percent from 1930. Territories and possessions grew faster than the mainland with Panama Canal Zone and Puerto Rico contributing large gains. Subpopulations list Alaska American Samoa Guam Hawaii and others with 1939 and 1930 figures.
The University of Kansas football squad of 35 players sails for Columbia to face Missouri in the 49th Kansas-Missouri game. The trip includes train travel via Union Pacific and Wabash lines, a return special by train, turkey dinners, and a halftime demonstration planned by Director Russell L. Wiley. The 111 piece band and 24 flag twirlers join, with tickets available and game broadcasts arranged.
Kansas City November 19 Gene Zachman manager of the Kansas City auditorium and Dr F C Allen University of Kansas basketball coach and NCAA tournament manager signed contracts for the national championship date March 29 and for the western playoffs March 21.
The University of Kansas Newman Club invites non-Catholic students to a corporate communion and breakfast next Sunday. The event begins with a 9 30 o clock mass followed by a light breakfast group singing a lecture and a discussion.
