Germany wins a battlefield victory in Italy but suffers a political setback as Allies unite, Italy resists collapse, and hunger and disruption deepen at home. In Wichita the American Red Cross reports 2148 knitted items sent to St Louis since last summer, value $10,592, and 1039 surgical dressings made in a single day. Also note the death of Jonathan Winslow of Tonganoxie at 76, with obituaries listing survivors and funeral at Friends Church Maple Grove cemetery.
Battery B at Fort Sill is working to arrange a postseason game against Haskell. Captain Amick sent a letter last week, but no definite decision has been made. If held on Haskell grounds, a piece route would be assured. Italy began organizing football teams while still steamengine era.
Reports of a new march on Petrograd to oust the Bolsheviki surface amid internal dissension in Petrograd between maximalists and extreme socialists. A split in Bolshevik ranks is alleged. Moscow saw a truce after days of fighting with thousands killed. The American embassy seeks a train to evacuate 200 Americans via Harbin to Dalny or Vladivostok. Jaffa and the sea fort near Jerusalem seized by British forces. Turks retreat northward. General Allenby’s troops likely to seize Jerusalem within days.
Gen Pershing reports two killed three severely wounded four slightly wounded in action on November 13. Killed Sg John Czajka and Pvt Stanley Janovicz. Severely wounded Priv Earl Aurand Francis Blevins Edward Cahill. Slightly wounded Sg John Logan Pvt Chester Johnson Robert Redd. Also one accidental death Sg Carl Shew. Two additional deaths Private Marcellus Cobb and Private Howard Rawlings. Passed aviation tests at Omaha 17 men and balloon service 37. names include C E Cone and H Cross.
Italian forces repel Austro German crossings on the Piave above Zenson and Fagare. Italians hold Asiago plateau with renewed offensives near Asiago and Monte Montsenera. British and French fronts show pressure on Passchendaele ridge and St Quentin sectors as raids and heavy shelling continue.
General Frederick Stanley Maude, famed for capturing Baghdad, died last night in Mesopotamia after a brief illness. The 53 year old officer, who led a string of British successes, previously distinguished himself in the Sudan campaign of 1885 and the South African war, earning the Khedive's star, service order, and Queen's Medal with six clasps.
Petrograd dispatch reports Germany will not negotiate peace with the new soldiers and workmen's government. Emperor William allegedly said peace talks require the legal successor to the imperial government or a constituent assembly. A Volta Norada note claims if relief isn’t received by November 23, the soldiers and workers government may decide to make peace on its own, with Russia adopting a neutral stance.
Agricultural experts met with Doug lss County men in round table discussions of farm problems. Harvey, a prominent colored farmer of Douglas county, was reelected president of the Douglas County Farmers Institute at the annual meeting. Officers elected included E. L. Eastman secretary and John Bowman treasurer with four vice presidents. The gathering covered farm bureaus, hog cholera control, insect management, and spraying methods, with emphasis on cooperation between farmers and the agricultural college.
Six prisoners from the November district court term were sent to the state penitentiary at Lansing to begin sentences ranging from one to five years. Ben Clawson, previously paroled for wife desertion, will serve one to two years. Hugo Jarmon to be sent to a state reformatory at Hutchinson. Alberry Peterson appeals to the supreme court and will be retried.
Chicago Federation of Labor ordered an inquiry into charges that waiters in first class Chicago hotels were alien enemies and agents of foreign powers seeking hotel information. The probe was to be reported to Federal authorities. The waiter’s union representative Parker made the accusation, which hotel owners denied, saying precautions against espionage have been in place since war began.
University and Lawrence girls under prominent women led a tag sale across Lawrence on Saturday. Visitors from Nebraska and Kansas were tagged and counted, with $915.44 raised for the local Red Cross chapter crediting Mrs. T. Sadler and the financial committee for leadership and support from local newspapers and parties.
The Kansas Bankers' Association Group Two will convene next Wednesday with about 250 bankers expected. The program features two sessions at Eldridge hotel starting 10 am, with Reverend Ross W Anderson giving the invocation and J D Bownbrsock of Lawrence National Bank delivering the welcome. The aim is to support soldiers and sailors in their leisure hours. Campaigns completed show about one and a half million dollars subscribed. The Proverb of Success notes a boastful saying by a millionaire about making hay while the sun shines.
An urgent appeal to Lawrence citizens urges raising the Y M C A war fund. So far $7,100 subscribed toward an $8,435 goal with $1,835 still needed. Outside county contributions total $1,280, including Palmyra and Eudora High School. Subscriptions may be left at the Jelly Y M C A or banks, with staged payments through April.

Chancellor Frank Strong and John Sundwall led a mass meeting of medical students today urging continued drill despite heavy workload. The petition for exemption was discussed with Sundwall defending the school’s stance and the faculty considering student concerns.
Former Lawrence resident Harry F. Crum died in Portland last week after an eight month illness at age fifty seven. He worked for the Santa Fe system in Lawrence for twenty years and for the Oregon Washington railroad for fifteen years, later serving seven years as assistant to Manager W. C. Rahby. A Mason, he was active in Eureka Council Perth and Ladies of Security. His funeral was conducted by fellow Masons in Portland last Friday.
