Toprexa-Gene Bicknell former GOP gubernatorial candidate says he does not expect trouble with Senate confirmation to the Kansas Board of Regents. He endorsed Jim Slattery for governor over Bill Graves but believes politics will not affect the January hearing. He was appointed by Gov. Finney in October and hopes past wounds will heal. Hurricane Gordon hammers North Carolina barrier islands with 80 mph winds and 90 mph gusts, flooding roads and stranding fishermen. Forecasters warn of possible tornadoes as the storm slows offshore and drifts north toward the Atlantic.
GAITHERSBURG Md. Osteoporosis patients may continue using etidronate despite an FDA advisory panel finding no proof of its significant benefit. Doctors warn some will keep prescribing it off label while it remains marketed for other bone diseases. Procter & Gamble argues etidronate Didrocal reduces fractures in severe cases compared with calcium.
Osteoporosis gradually makes bones brittle leading to 1.5 million fractures yearly and tens of thousands of deaths. It affects about 25 million Americans, 80 percent of them women, and roughly 200 million people globally. Risk rises with age.
Seventh and eighth graders at Lawrence vote on three mascots Bulldog Road Runner and Green Dragon plus three colors for the new Southwest Junior High opening in August. Students favor Bulldogs and Road Runners while asking about halls lockers and portable buildings as administrators confirm a single long hallway and 600 lockers for about 550 expected students.
