A Douglas County jury convicted 28 year old John William of first degree murder for the July 12, 1988, killing of Richard Settlemyre, 9, in Lawrence after a weeklong trial. Sentencing set for December 21 with possible motions for new trial.
Special education teachers in Lawrence use a $2,009 Rotary Club donation to buy a diverse wheeled fleet for mobile instruction. The collection includes 16 turtle scooters, a steering scooter for movement, about 20 foot-operated tricycles, and pedal cars to aid accessibility and learning.
Two men died and three people were injured on the Kansas Turnpike east of Lawrence Friday night. Kansas Supreme Court Justice Fred N. Six, 60, of Lawrence, was listed in good condition with a neck injury. His wife Lillian, 55, was in fair condition with facial lacerations. Patrick J. Dinnen, 42, and Terry L. Harris, 32, both of Topeka, were pronounced dead at the scene. Lori Michelle Littlefield, 32, also of Topeka, flown to KU Medical Center in serious condition after head and internal injuries. The wreck occurred near the East Lawrence interchange at 9:32 p.m. The Nissan left the road, became airborne over a barrier, struck the eastbound pavement, then collided head-on with Six’s Honda.
