A 17 year old Missouri escapee from Osage County was captured on the Kansas Turnpike near the West Lawrence interchange. Orville Irving Cunningham of Linn Missouri faces auto theft and rape charges and had reportedly escaped by lifting a cell bar and squeezing through a cut opening. He was to be returned to Missouri.

Washington AP reports U S personal income rose to a record annual rate of 409.6 billion dollars in October. The gain beat September by 800 million and exceeded October last year by 25 billion, aided by rises in government construction and retail wages despite a dip in factory wages. Farm income dipped slightly while business proprietors and professional incomes improved.

Lawrence resident Harlan Gene Dankenbring 20 of 421 Ohio St. is indicted for possessing an unregistered firearm. Walter Allen of De Soto faces a forging and passing charge related to a check violation. Dankenbring altered a .12 gauge shotgun barrel to 16 inches. Police reported the alteration violated the National Firearms Act and firearm reporting rules.

Accidental Gun Fatality near Lecompton Involves Topeka Youth
Jerry Porter a 17 year old Topeka high school senior died after a .22 caliber gun in a car window discharged during a squirrel hunting trip with three companions near Lecompton. Schultz fired the shot that started the sequence and Porter was struck in the head as the gun discharged when the car door slammed. The accident occurred while four teens skipped classes for the outing and Porter died later at Stormont Vail Hospital. An autopsy was conducted in Topeka as Undersheriff Roberts and Deputy Wolfe investigated. Porter was born August 15 1943 and was a member of the First Assembly of God Church.
