U S battlefield deaths in Vietnam for the past five weeks have fallen to the lowest level in six years, with combat deaths averaging six per week since Oct 9 and nonhostile deaths averaging 33 for the week ending Nov 6. Aircraft accidents remain the top killer.
In a first for the war, the South Vietnamese air force will join U S and Navy missions against the Ho Chi Minh supply trail in eastern Laos during the dry season. Initially small in scope, VN planes will supplement American bombing as political settlement remains uncertain. The U S project to withdraw from Vietnam continues despite continued air operations from bases in Thailand and Tonkin Gulf. The Vietnamese air force has grown to 39 squadrons, over 900 aircraft and about 46 000 personnel.
Six Attica State Prison inmates say living conditions have not improved since the September four day revolt in which 43 died. A New York special committee reports improvements have been made despite ongoing tension and unaddressed inmate grievances.
The Journal-World prints the Vietnam Christmas Remembrance List for local service personnel in Southeast Asia as a sign of ongoing U.S. disengagement. The 18 names reflect a continued drop from 51 in 1967, 124 in 1968, 64 in 1969, and 27 last year.

About 100000 teachers would be affected as their school year began during the freeze. Secretary Connally hailed the 90 day freeze as a success while cautioning about future rules.
Lawrence United Fund nears the halfway mark with 89 percent of its $150 055 goal. The drive totals $133 226 this morning as officers plan a possible extension. Divisions show KU 96.5 percent, Professional 91 percent, Business 83 percent, Residential 81 percent. Industrial and public schools trail. federal employees city and county workers and major housing have surpassed goals.
