In New Orleans the white boycott of McDonogh No. 19 and Frantz School left three Negro first graders in class, escorted by six U.S. marshals. Few white students attended, and tensions continued after widespread demonstrations and violence the prior night.
The Legislative Council voted 10-7 to back a short ballot plan replacing many minor state offices with appointments and to back a re apportionment scheme reducing Kansas House seats from 125 to 105 while assigning one House seat per county and reshaping Senate representation by population. The measures require legislative passage and voter approval in 1962.
On the final day of the Lawrence United Fund drive, today’s collections reach 53,373.30 bringing the total to 53,373.30, still 2,226.70 short of the 55,600 goal. Drive chairman Bob Payne urged further contributions and offered home pickups via the United Fund office, V13-0986, for those who have donated.

Southwestern Bell officials announce continued weatherproofing of calls in Kansas with 850 miles of underground cable in service and a 218 mile link connecting Salina to Goodland due to ice and wind storms. Movie star Elizabeth Taylor left the London hospital tonight returning to her hotel. She had been treated since arriving in September to star in a film and was diagnosed with meningism likely caused by bad teeth.
At Logan International Airport a Eastern Air Lines DC8 bound for Philadelphia and Miami halted its takeoff after a flock of starlings struck the wings and engines. The plane carried 99 passengers and eight crew. Feathers were found in three engines and on the wing. A nearby TWA plane was struck by birds moments earlier during approach.
Fletcher D. Hunt 85 of Baldwin died Wednesday in Ottawa after five years ill health. A Baldwin Lumber Co. retiree of 28 years, he served as city treasurer ten years and one term on the city council. Clarence P. Aul 68 of 1515 Vt. St. Lawrence resident of 17 years died morning in a Sabetha hospital after years of illness. The KU Westminster Center at 1204 Oread is renamed in honor of the Stan ton B. Olinger family during dedication events. Rev. Olinger joined KU in 1911 and helped found the Religion School. his wife led Westminster Hall for a decade and joined the Westminster Foundation Board in 1940.
