Gates warns of layoffs without war funding votes
Defense Secretary Robert Gates warned Congress that failure to pass a new Iraq and Afghanistan war funding bill within days would force the Army and Marine Corps to begin laying off about 100,000 civilian employees and contractors by mid February, with Marines following a month later. He said only about 3.7 billion dollars could be moved internally, insufficient to cover ongoing operations. Senate and White House position cited.
