A Kansas legislative interim committee approved a bill setting a two year statute of limitations for damages from defective products and barring suits when a product is used beyond its normal life. The measure, now to the full legislature, would require juries to determine damages and tightens filing rules amid insurance concerns raised by manufacturers.
Democrats and GOP members clash after defeats with talks of spying and research practices. Arden Booth accuses opponents of using campaign flyers and negative research while Berman admits help from fellow Democrats. Calls grow for tougher truth squads and aggressive strategy to win back voters.
More than 100 lawmakers from Kansas and other states will attend a three day Legislative Institute at the University of Kansas. Events include morning and afternoon sessions on lawmaking, oversight, support services, and ethics with leaders from Kansas and other states, plus speakers such as Gov. In Geneva two black nationalist leaders reject Richard's plan for Rhodesia's transition. Joshua Nkomo and Robert Mugabe demand a Dec 1, 1977 deadline for black majority rule, while Ian Smith's government seeks a two year timetable with white interim rule. They blamed Britain for a crisis in talks.
Tonganoxie High School will host a workshop Wednesday inviting six other Pioneer League councils. DeSoto Garnett Lansing Gardner Paola and Osawatomie high schools will attend the session to discuss student leadership.
CHICAGO AP Bob Lemon, Hall of Fame pitcher and 20 game winner, was named manager of the Chicago White Sox. He succeeds Paul Richards, who steps down and will serve as consultant. Lemon previously led the Kansas City Royals from 1970 to 1972 with two fourth-place finishes and one second.
Ed Down of the Lawrence Improvement Assn says he has no immediate plans to leave ELIA or form a new group over the Haskell Loop issue. He may attend upcoming ELIA meetings as debate continues about a splinter association and loop funding. The Jan. 19 public hearing on the loop EIS at the Lawrence Public Library is set for 7 30 p m with an information period beforehand.
NBC will cancel its Wednesday TV movie block and debut three new comedies on December 1. The changes move The Practice to 8 30 p m, replace the time with CPC Sharkey The McLean Stevenson Show and Sirotta s Court. CBS also canceled The Blue Knight and Tony Orlando s Tuesday variety show amid low season ratings.
President Ford returns to Washington to plan the 1978 federal budget with James T. Lynn. He aims to present the fiscal 1978 proposal to Congress in January, with 1977 spending expected to top 413 billion and a 50 billion deficit.
