The Commerce Department reports October retail sales fell 1 percent to a seasonally adjusted 144.5 billion, the first decline in eight months, with auto sales down 5.1 percent and durable goods dropping 2.7 percent. Excluding autos, sales edged up 0.2 percent as nondurable gains offset declines in gasoline and restaurants.
Lawrence school board approved a trial of the Skills for Adolescence drug prevention curriculum at South Junior High for next semester. About 100 students will participate while 100 serve as a control group. Officials will monitor attendance, grades, office visits, detentions, suspensions, and health visits to measure impact, with a report due by July.

Lawrence police say no arrests are planned in the Monday shooting that killed Kansas University student Brian Keith Robinson a first semester mechanical engineering freshman. Four men were in the Ark Avenue apartment when the shot was fired. district attorney will determine if charges are warranted. Police confiscated long arm rifles and other weapons as evidence. Robinson, 21, from Topeka, had been visiting the apartment with friends after a country outing.
