Congress approved a bill increasing the national debt ceiling to a record 595 billion dollars effective until March 15 next year. The move preserves government operations and prevents a breach of the legal limit, after defeating attempts to cap spending at 395 billion.

The Ford administration screens fewer than 12 names for the Supreme Court, with the ABA to report on qualifications next week.
