Kansas State University crops and soils specialist Howard Wilkins will speak on fertilizer use at the fifth annual Farmers Night on Thursday at the 4 H Fairgrounds. About 200 to 300 livestock owners are expected. a stock expert panel will lead the discussion. The event is sponsored by Lawrence National Bank.
Rex Mills of 2617 Belle Crest Drive is appointed sales manager of Bellinger Electric Co at 814 Mass St and for the boat and motor division with showroom at 707 N.H. St Leo T Bellinger owner will continue to manage both establishments Mills previously served Intertype Co as a sales representative for five years in Kansas Nebraska Missouri and Iowa and earlier worked for Capper Publications in Topeka and The World Company as a type compositor.
Danny M. Dunivan a 16 year old Sunflower resident was struck by lightning while walking in Sunflower Village late Sunday night. He was unconscious for about 45 minutes and reported in fair condition at Lawrence Memorial Hospital with neck pain but no serious burns. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Paul M Dunivan.
Kansas University students vote today and Wednesday in a general election for all Student Council living district representatives and freshman class officers. Twenty nine candidates compete for eight ASC posts with 12 freshman officer hopefuls unaffiliated with Vox Populi or University Party. Ballots counted Wednesday morning.
Secretary of the Interior Stewart Udall signed a report urging Congress to establish Prairie National Park in Kansas. The bill would authorize creating a park up to 60,000 acres in Pottawatomie County to preserve prairie grassland and wildlife, with western boundary extended to Tuttle Creek Reservoir to avoid an interstate highway cut.
The Breakfast Optimist Club sponsors a free skating party at Lawrence Roller Rink on East 23rd Street. Junior high students skate 6 to 8 p.m. and senior high 8 to 10 p.m. Door prizes will be awarded as part of Youth Appreciation Week chaired by Frank Case.
Two area residents suffered minor injuries in a two car crash about 6:20 p.m. Monday a half mile north of Lecompton. James M. Cole 40 of Lecompton treated for facial cuts at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Karen Lea Bolte 21 of Perry had a cut nose but no treatment. The collision occurred on a short curve just south of the Lecompton bridge. The sheriff's office investigated.

Prof. Charles D. Michener of Kansas University urged a town wide sanitation program to remove sick elm trees quickly as the most effective defense against Dutch Elm Disease. He stressed cooperation, noted spraying can help, and warned that inaction would be costly with 18,586 elms in Lawrence and potential removal costs around 836000 if not addressed.

They predict wide margins and pledge continued U S ties as voters go to polls for 8 Senate seats and 104 House seats amid a record turnout forecast.
Thirty four Kansas high school senior girls were named finalists for the Watkins scholarships at KU. finalists will visit December 4 5 for testing and interviews. Scholarships are renewable for four years based on merit and need equity.
Two Lawrence men injured in a traffic accident near Ottawa were listed in fair condition at Ransom Memorial Hospital. Henry Murphy 20 Route 5 suffered severe facial cuts Clyde Wagner 31 Route 3 chest injuries and both slept well. Wagner had chest pains.Larry M Stogsdill 18 Liberty Mo in good condition at Lawrence Memorial Hospital after a one car wreck near Baldwin Junction. companion Robert E Farmer 18 Kansas City Mo was killed. Stogsdill had a fractured right collarbone facial cuts scalp cuts and tendon injuries.
A Kansas University student allegedly tried to end his life Monday night by cutting his wrist with a razor at his rooming house. Friends found him and he was rushed to Watkins Hospital where Dr. Ralph Canuteson reported he had lost a lot of blood but was in good condition.
The Lawrence PTA council narrowly approved the 1961-62 budget 45 to 30 with a by laws revision committee to follow. Mrs. Maxine Scoville urged unity and urged itemized budgeting and more leadership funding while Rachel Flory Fund shifts to a community service role were approved.
The Defense Department issued a call for 345 doctors to be assigned to the Army. This marks the third such request this year and brings total doctor drafts for 1961 to 1,025.

Comedienne Lucille Ball announced plans to wed Gary Morton, a comic she met on a blind date. A quiet Sunday ceremony is planned in New York with Rev Norman Vincent Peale officiating, attended by Ball’s mother two children and about a dozen friends.
Richard Linsey, 31, a roustabout, died in the state gas chamber at San Quentin for raping and killing a 6 year old girl. His common law wife Dixie Elaine Lindsey, 23, received two life terms for bludgeoning the victim with a tire iron after the rape. The couple abducted Rose Marie Riddle from a Shafter labor camp and fled to a field near San Francisco. Lindsey pleaded guilty January 20 and was pronounced dead at 10 12 a.m. The case drew international attention and led to a newborn placed in custody.
The writer thanks Drs Nelson and Zimmer and all nurses and aides on the 3rd floor for care and kindness during the hospital stay. Appreciation goes to friends who sent cards letters and those who called.
