At Leavenworth federal prison on November 14, inmate Joe Martinez stabbed Captain A. H. Leonard to death in a bid to escape and wounded four other guards before being shot by a fellow guard. Martinez, a Mexican veteran of the 125th Infantry, had been imprisoned for first degree murder since December 1915.
