Sister Georgeanne Desch, 92, a member of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth, died November 12 2012 at Ross Hall Leavenworth KS. Born November 2 1920 in Topeka she taught in elementary schools 41 years, led parochial programs 32 years and served in MT KS MO before retiring to Ross Hall in 2007. A vigil is set for November 14 at 7 00 p.m. with Mass of Christian Burial November 15 at 10 30 a.m. in Ross Chapel Mount Olivet Cemetery interment follows. Memorials to the retirement fund.

Wichita's Operation Freedom Memorial site was dedicated in Veterans Memorial Park. The 25-foot circle features a central sculpture and three 8-foot black granite walls bearing the names of nearly 100 Kansans killed in action in Iraq and Afghanistan. Funds are still needed to complete construction. Anita Dixon initiated the project after her son, Sgt. Evan Parker, died in 2005, seeing value in recognizing all Kansans in service.
A Union Pacific train derailed just north of Grantville late Monday night with 23 coal cars derailed. No injuries were reported though one house was damaged when a rail piece struck a bunk bed where a child slept. Roads into town were closed awaiting clearance.
