Public comments highlight election concerns and tax questions
Lawrence residents voiced distrust over past spending and a perceived cash mindset at the city commission meeting. Talk focused on no bid contracts for Rock Chalk Park and funding for a police headquarters, with calls to consider property taxes. The panel postponed a 300000 loan guarantee for Wicked Broadband as two commissioners were absent and study sessions were planned for December.

Kansas lawmakers face budget gap tied to 2012 2013 tax cuts
Brownback budget director Shawn Sullivan cited tax cuts from 2012 and 2013 as a main source of revenue shortfall while lawmakers debate possible revisions. Senate Democrats, including Tom Holland, push for reconsideration, though prospects are slim. House Republicans stress cuts are needed, with K-12 and higher education at risk. Lawmakers plan to return January 12 to begin the 2015 session as Brownback prepares his State of the State address.
