Iowa sex offender residency law faces court tests national
The Iowa statute restricting where sex offenders may live may reach the Supreme Court as the Iowa Civil Liberties Union challenges the rule. States across the nation have adopted similar 2000 foot buffers around parks and schools amid a wave of tougher local laws. The ICLU argues the rule punishes offenders after they have served their sentences, while authorities defend the public safety rationale. The case, already fought through federal courts, could become a landmark in how residency restrictions are applied nationwide.
