A televised program titled The Political Obituary of Richard M. Nixon triggered protests after Alger Hiss appeared. Stations canceled the show, pickets gathered outside ABC studios in New York and Los Angeles, and a bomb threat at a Midwest station proved fake.
More than 1,000 students walked out at the University of Wichita to protest a plan to make WU an extension center in the state system. The Eurich report endorsed by the Kansas Board of Regents would have WU governed by KU and KSU, branding it the State Universities Center at Wichita.
Jose Maria de Osma, KU professor emeritus of Spanish and Portuguese, died Saturday at his home. Memorial services set for 4 p.m. Tuesday at Rumsey Funeral Home with cremation. Donations to Calderon de la Barca scholarship fund. Survivors include wife Helen and three daughters. First wife Matilda died in 1928.

The $8 million Intercity viaduct between Kansas City Missouri and Kansas City Kansas opened to traffic today. The parallel old bridge was closed for rehabilitation.
Fair and warmer weather in northeast Kansas through Tuesday with nightly lows near 30 to 35 and daytime highs around 70. Temperature readings show late afternoon values in the 50s to low 60s, with prior day high 59 and a record high of 76 in 1944.
Typhoon Karen struck Guam as the strongest tropical storm in memory, wrecking much of the civilian housing and destroying schools and hospital facilities. Reports say 100 million dollars in damage with hundreds injured and at least one death. The Pacific Fleet noted a three day warning saved lives as residents shelter and await aid.
A Tokyo exporter Sakata Hikaji, 38, reports $1 million worth of pearls missing from his ninth floor hotel room in Fort Worth. A house detective found the door pried while Sakata was at a club. he kept 60 000 natural and cultured pearls in the United States since July and blamed leaving them in the suitcase instead of the hotel safe.

Disappointed local hunters report a poor opening weekend for pheasants as heavy cover and few birds limited scores. Groups in Norton and Cloud County ranged from 3 to 18 birds, with most parties averaging around 14 to 20 in two days. Local residents cited heavy cover and lack of dogs as factors in the low totals.
Temperatures Tuesday through Saturday will average six to ten degrees above normal with mostly mild days. Highs reach the low to mid 20s and little to no precipitation is expected.
A cache of rare coins valued at least fifty thousand dollars was stolen from the Harry Truman Library in Independence Missouri. The burglars drilled a rear door lock and took 38 display boards with 444 coins from every presidential administration. The value is said to exceed fifty thousand dollars with some estimates over one hundred thousand. FBI will handle the recovery. John W. Snyder loaned the collection to the library.
Journal-World photographer Wilbur Hess won first place in the Missouri-Kansas Associated Press News photo Contest feature division. His image shows a robin nesting on a rail before a sign Ye must be born again, marking his third recent honor. 73 photographers from 29 papers entered 578 images.
